Keyword Density
The number of times that a word or phrase appears on a page in relation to the number of other words on the page measure keyword density. To high and the page is penalized for stuffing or SPAMing and too low keyword density and the competition passes you. When you calculate it the range can be stated between 2.4 and 6.0. Keyword density can be measured, and it is, in many different ways. Some search engines and directories include the head tags of the html content and others will not. Many website count the "alt" tags of an image while still others count the page name and table names too. In fact all of the places where your webpage can be advertised from will use some combination of all the html on your webpage. There is hope for correctly designing keyword density optimized webpages.
Keyword DensityThe first part of implementing keyword density elements are the prominence factor. Prominence is critical and is determined by how soon the keyword/phrase appears on the webpage. It absolutely must be the very first text in the body and as a good rule of thumb place it three times in the first paragraph. Be careful not to over use it or penalties for high keyword density destroy your efforts. Place the word/phrase at the beginning of the title tag, description, and keyword tags too. A word of caution though, don't use poor grammar when writing any part of the webpage. If you can't put the keyword/phrase at the beginning for grammatical reasons than always use grammar first. Keyword density after the first paragraph becomes more art than science. We can use science to help us measure density, but the art comes in writing a webpage for meaningful and useful information while at the same time maintaining keyword density totals. Though we focus on prominence and keyword use we also have to keep in mind that we are soliciting customers to buy our products and services. The webpage may do excellent for positioning our advertising ahead of the competition, but if it produces no revenues than it's worthless. There are resources available that write webpages and some of them are SEO and some of them are marketing resources. Very few of the webpage resources understand keyword density and fewer still are focused on writing to produce revenues. Keyword density measures the relationship of a particular word or phrase to the number of other words on the same webpage.
